Why didn't I even think of that? It is my favourite Wilde short story by a good measure. I'm pleased it is raining so I can find this film this afternoon.Anthonyhttp://timesflowstemmed.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-73594834955509739762016-03-21T13:09:29.512-05:002016-03-21T13:09:29.512-05:00Updated to World War II! What I remember better is the 1944 film version with Charles Laughton as the ghost. I should see what Wilde we have on the shelves at home. Not a lot, but maybe a collection with "Ghost."scott g.f.baileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05726743149139510832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-3197283344721754882016-03-20T22:47:10.187-05:002016-03-20T22:47:10.187-05:00Such a likable story. Clever, funny, sad, yes.

Roger's distinctions are accurate, although in the context of "The Canterville Ghost" it seems that the ghost can only do what it is allowed to do. So those James & James characters had it coming, I guess.

I have also turned against giant "Complete Works" volumes. Such is the wisdom of age and experience.Amateur Reader (Tom)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13675275555757408496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-50337459918224296022016-03-20T19:16:43.509-05:002016-03-20T19:16:43.509-05:00I must reread The Canterville Ghost. I have one of those 'Complete Works' books that seem like a good idea but are so damn unwieldy that they remain on the shelf almost blocking you from returning to their author. If he'd been a Jamesian ghost the story would have gone very differently: with Henry the family's hidden secrets would have emerged and they would have gone mad with horror at what they learned about themselves; with M.R. he'd simply have torn them limb from limb.Roger Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11012987757094423896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-65669427961194275882016-03-20T09:07:11.226-05:002016-03-20T09:07:11.226-05:00I *love* The Canterville Ghost - if Oscar had writ...I *love* The Canterville Ghost - if Oscar had written nothing else but this it would have made him unforgettable!
