Perhaps I will begin with RBOC. The story, as summarized, gives no hint about the shifts in tone, in the humor, for example.

Yet it is also a first-rate adventure story.Amateur Reader (Tom)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13675275555757408496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-35349425500309540262016-02-11T22:39:00.984-06:002016-02-11T22:39:00.984-06:00i just read this story two weeks ago and was most ...i just read this story two weeks ago and was most impressed by the humor and the fact that though they were in this tiny boat for three days with nothing to eat and not much to drink, describing the suffering took a second place to the humor. when they were watching the tourists on the beach before landing, a certain dry regard emerged that emphasized their aloneness, though. many things could be said about this story, which in itself points to it's excellence.Mudpuddlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17194891656971454279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-61009045132407223872016-02-11T21:21:32.477-06:002016-02-11T21:21:32.477-06:00Even funnier is how the two narrators have such di...Even funnier is how the two narrators have such different concerns. One is all "I'm gonna die" and the other is all "I just came up with the coolest metaphor."

There is a bit where a shark shows up and follows the boat for a while that is a perfect example. Meta-narrator says "[t]he speed and power of the thing was greatly to be admired"; rowing Crane "simply looked at the sea dully and swore in an undertone."

It's a great story. I wish Chekhov had read it. That's really good. Two fictional Cranes, only one aware of the other. I had no idea.

I know I read The Red Badge of Courage in school, but I can't remember any of it clearly. In my memory, it's weirdly conflated with All Quiet on the Western Front.scott g.f.baileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05726743149139510832noreply@blogger.com
