You can see that during your hiatus I have been grinding on as usual, five posts a week, like a lunatic.

"the main item" - very funny. You know how I like the mention of Thackeray too.

I'm going to go through these (from last week) in order I guess. Will go back and read my old posts somewhere along the line, try to remember a few things.

I recall being absorbed by backgrounds, per usual. Reading Blithedale Romance into Bostonians, I think, and remembering James' little book on Hawthorne. And then there's the Annie Fields piece of the puzzle, which I was trying to figure out.

But the main item here is that Miss Birdseye was a sort of cameo for Elizabeth Peabody--the elder statesman version of Elizabeth Peabody, not the young discoverer/supporter of Hawthorne. The comic philanthropist version. zhivhttp://zhiv.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-8848448285854178692016-06-07T12:37:00.157-05:002016-06-07T12:37:00.157-05:00James is so good in this book with descriptions of...James is so good in this book with descriptions of personality or attitude.

I suppose I enjoyed The Bostonians as much or more than any James I have read.
