For my part, I think he's a gifted prose stylist. And any lover of Bernardo Soares owes himself being at least acquainted with 'Master Vieira'.LMRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08538873868140070018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-38597147658835024582012-01-27T16:52:21.432-06:002012-01-27T16:52:21.432-06:00That's how I see it, too. The relevant question is: is it a good story, or an interesting one, or a story worth pulling out and thinking about. Probably not - but you never know!Amateur Reader (Tom)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13675275555757408496noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-30906715088900029182012-01-27T15:55:04.082-06:002012-01-27T15:55:04.082-06:00Father António Vieira has finally been translated?...Father António Vieira has finally been translated? That's amazing! His prose is one of the cornerstones of Portuguese literature.

There's a funny thing about Message: Pessoa doesn't devote a single poem to Camões. In The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, Saramago puts words in the mouth of the statue of Camões in Chiado, just a few meters away from Pessoa's in the logo, calling him envious. It's a lovely passage.LMRhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08538873868140070018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3383938214852108244.post-75410331796838988772012-01-27T12:25:21.420-06:002012-01-27T12:25:21.420-06:00Meaning, schmeaning. Having recently read Pale Fire, I have to constantly remind myself that the footnotes do not, in fact, constitute a meta-story of their own. Unless they do, without the knowledge of the editor! My incorrect conviction that there's a metanarrative fascinates me.

Where was I? Oh, this series on Pessoa has been terrific! Thank you. Disquiet is on my reading list now.scott g.f.baileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05726743149139510832noreply@blogger.com
